2017 AOAC China Section Forum on Food Analytical Science and Standards Successfully Concluded in Shanghai, China

To further communication and collaboration in the field of food safety and quality detection standards between China related parties and international counterparts, promote standards harmonization, exchange the cutting edge techniques relevant to food analysis and trace the AOAC project progress, a forum on food analytical science and standards was grandly organized by AOAC China Section and China Society of Inspection and Quarantine (CSIQ) during 25th-26th May, in Shanghai.

500 attendees from 60 organizations attended this meeting

The forum accumulated over 500 attendees from AOAC International, relevant authorities and agencies of Chinese government, governmental laboratories (subordinated to National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China, General Administration of Quality Supervision Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China, China Food and Drug Administration), universities and enterprises. More than 60 organizations from analysis instrument manufactures, multinational food companies, third party testing agencies were actively engaged in the meeting.

The forum was kicked off with the opening address of Dr. Liang Chengzhu, president of AOAC China Section, director of technical center of Shandong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. Mr. Wei Chuanzhong, member of the CPPCC National Committee, former deputy Minister of AQSIQ, President of CSIQ, also delivered an opening speech.

Topics in this forum are plentiful with 7 different sessions, including “Dialogue and Collaboration on Standards Between AOAC International and China”, “AOAC Project on Determination of Multiple Veterinary Drug Residues in Food and Collaboration with China”, “AOAC ISPAM Project and GB Method for Microbial Rapid Testing and Its Application”, “Focuses and Cutting-edge Technologies in Food Analysis”, “Progress on Allergen Detection in Foods and Rapid Testing Technologies in Food Safety”, “Progress on AOAC SPIFAN Program”, “Trends on Technologies for Detecting Chemical Residues and Contaminants in Food”. Meanwhile, four workshops covered the topics of dairy products analysis, rapid testing technologies and multi-analyte determination based on mass spectrometry.

Dr. Ron Johnson, President, AOAC INTERNATIONAL, gave a keynote speech

The keynote speech was started by Dr. Ron. Johnson, president of AOAC international, focusing on past activities of AOAC International and plans in the near future. Dr. Xiaojing, from China national center for food safety risk assessment (CFSA), introduced the progress of Chinese GB standards integration, future work and new actions. Ms. DeAnn L.Benesh, Board director of AOAC International, and a microbiology expert from 3M, gave emphasis to ISO 16140 (validation of alternative methods). After that, Mr. Bi Kexin, General Director of Import and Export Food Safety Bureau of China, gave a speech from governmental perspective on China food safety status and surveillance and management of import and export food safety. Professor Cao Jin, from National Institutes for Food and Drug Control (CFDA), introduced food rapid testing method evaluation requirements from FDA. Dr. Darryl Sullivan, Chair of SPIFAN, AOAC INTERNATIONAL Board Director, emphasized updates on AOAC SPIFAN program and with China laboratory involvement. Then, Dr. Xiao Liang, deputy chief executive, China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS), gave his speech with the opinion of certification and accreditation promote quality on standard enforcement in the testing laboratory.

Dr. Lei Bao, AOAC INTERNATIONAL Board Director, and Dr. Hongwei Zhang, Shandong CIQ, chaired the session titled AOAC collaboration with China on Project about Determination of Multiple Veterinary Drug Residues in Food. Associate Prof. Wang Hejia from China Institute of Veterinary Drug Control, Dr. Thierry Delatour from Nestlé Research Center, Dr. Yue Zhenfeng and Dr. Zhang Hongwei from CIQ, and also Dr. Wang Longfei from Nestlé Food Safety Institute, as well as senior application engineer from ThermoFisher and Agilent, all of them gave their presentations focusing on analysis of multi-veterinary drugs residues, including method development, standards establishment, quality control and new applications. Meanwhile, a round-table discussion on working guideline of AOAC multi-veterinary drugs determination was conducted, and some valuable suggestions and opinions were proposed.

In the session of Dialogue between AOAC ISPAM Project and GB Method for Microbial Rapid Testing and Its Application, Ms. DeAnn L. Benesh from AOAC International, Professor Cui Shenghui from national food safety standard (GB) review committee, Dr. Shen Jinling, Shanghai CIQ and Mr. Jia Juntao, Shandong CIQ, and experts from enterprises, expressed their views from their perspectives on AOAC ISPAM project, microbiology rapid testing techniques and standard establishment, application of modern analytical technology in microbiology. Round-table discussion was also carried out on topics mentioned.

Roundtable Discussion on microbiology

As for session of Focuses and Cutting-edge Technologies in Food Analysis, Dr. Zhang Zhaohui and Dr. Zhang Xiaomei from governmental laboratories shared their expertise on interpretation of GB standard, including the topics like determination of cyanide in foods and authenticity analysis for E-jiao. Experts from enterprises addressed topics of veterinary drug residues analysis, microbiological RNA rapid testing method and intelligent solutions for integrated laboratory management.

In the session of Progress on Allergen Detection in Foods and Rapid Testing Technologies in Food Safety, Professor Zhang Zhe from China national center for food safety risk assessment, professor Li Zhenxing form ocean university of China, chief physician Shao Jie from Shanghai jiaotong university, professor Ren Yiping from Yangtze Delta Region institute of Tsinghua university, together with experts from Danone, and Merieux NutriSciences, concentrating on food allergen analysis shared their opinions in presentations and round-table discussions. Furtherly, Dr. Cai Yichun, Dr.Zhu Hai and Dr. Danrey Toth made their presentations on food rapid testing with different techniques.

In the session of Progress on AOAC SPIFAN program, Dr. Darryl Sullivan, Prof. Ren Yiping, Ms, Miao Hong from key laboratory for food safety risk assessment, CFSA, Ms. Feng Ping from Wyeth Nutrition and Dr. Zhang Jing from Beijing CDC, presented  determination of 3-MCPD, casein phosphopeptides, whey protein in infant formula, bisphenol A in food and beverage, respectively. The following well organized round-table discussion also expressed feedback and opinions from Chinese experts and attendees.

At the final session of Trends on Technologies for Detecting Chemical Residues and Contaminants in Food, Mr. Miao Shui from Shanghai FDA, Dr. Li Shaobo from Chengdu institute of food and drug inspection, and two experts from enterprises presented their practices on pesticide residues determination in TCMs, chlorate and perchlorate detection in foods, aflatoxin M1 analysis in infant foods, discovery and analysis of contaminants derived from food processing with micro infrared spectrometry respectively.

The forum has provided beneficial opportunities for dialogue and harmony on detection standards between China GB methods and international organization drafted methods, also a platform for domestic and foreign experts expressing their opinions, voicing their professional points, and better suggestions for establishing standards furtherly improving the level of China detection standards and showing competent power as international standards in food safety. In addition, international peers could well-understand relevant regulations and abilities in securing food safety in China, as well as big potentials in Chinses food analysis market, and then promote collaboration on higher level.
