AOAC ISPAM Project and GB Method for Microbial Rapid Testing and Its Application

The forum on Food Analytical Science and Standard Meeting was successfully held by AOAC China Section and China Society of Inspection and Quarantine (CSIQ) on 25th-26th May, 2017, in Shanghai. Hundreds of attendants from the AOAC INTERNATIONAL, National Food Safety Standards Review Committee of China, government agencies, industries, universities and companies participated in this forum, which helped them know a lot about analytical techniques, detection standards and food regulations between China related parties and international counterparts in the area of food safety.

The session "AOAC ISPAM Project and GB Method for Microbial Rapid Testing and Its Application " was co-chaired by AOAC INTERNATIONAL Board Director, Dr. DeAnn L. Benesh and Prof. Shenghui Cui who is the Chairman of Microorganism Sub-committee, National Food Safety Standard (GB) Review Committee.Dr. DeAnn L. Benesh gave her speech on AOAC International Stakeholder Panel on Alternative Methods. Prof. Shenghui Cui from CFDA, and Mr. Subiao Lu of 3M Food Safety talked about the rapid microbiological methods. Dr. Jinling Shen of Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau shared her work on comparison of standardization for microbiological testing between China and AOAC. Prof. Juntao Jia of Shandong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau presented his work on microbial analysis by modern instruments.

As a preceded part of the session, a round table discussion about food microbiology attracted a lot of attendants. Attendants from food companies, high technology providers and testing agencies asked many questions about food microbiological techniques, standards and regulations. The questions and answers were focused on several aspects, such as the procedure of AOAC standards and Chinese SN standards, the validation of alternative methods, the control of pathogen during food production, and so on. To clarify developing AOAC standards, Dr. Benesh explained the procedure and rules of AOAC method validation. And then Dr. Shen shared her experience in the application and developing of AOAC standard with the questioners. Some attendants also showed interests in developing Chinese SN standards. So Prof. Jia introduced the procedure of applying and the application scope of SN standards. So many standard systems exist, such as GB, SN, AOAC, ISO, etc, which confused analysts to make a choice. Then Prof. Cui explained the GB standards, which are the reference methods in the area of food microbiology in China. Furthermore, as a member of GB committee, he introduced the progress and difficulties of Chinese standard conformity. Last, Mr. Su shared idea on food safety with some attendants from food manufacturers.

It was a good chance for all the people interested in food safety to communicate in the meeting. This meeting made the attendants understand the microbiological standards and regulations in China to some extent and it will help to promote trade and to facilitate public health and safety.
